Composer
Lewis Furber was born in Southend-On-Sea, Essex, where he first studied classical guitar and piano before deciding to experiment with composition.
He began studying at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2010, having had no previous formal training in composition. Here his musical tastes grew from purely late romantic symphonic music to an eclectic mix of styles – most notably Ralph Vaughan Williams, Olivier Messiaen, George Crumb, and Henryk Gorecki – which were strong influences on his work.
This multi-faceted palette of influences has led to a peculiar menagerie of works, where English pastoral music sits between violent dissonance and simplistic minimalism. This juxtaposition also rears its head within single works such as Lewis’ five-movement Schizophrenic Sinfonietta, written and performed in the Spring of 2011.
