Composer-in-Residence, Sinfonia Newydd Ensemble

David Harrington is a composer, accompanist and music director from Portsmouth, Hampshire; embracing the art of music performance from the age of 12.

Beginning as a pianist, David trained informally for two years before passing his grade 8 piano exam, and after completing his A-levels, achieved a Performance Diploma (Piano) with distinction. During this time, David gained invaluable experience from accompanying both choirs and soloists in and around Portsmouth, organising numerous concerts and performing solo recitals across the city. He has since performed alongside, the London Show Orchestra, the Band of HM royal marines, Cory Brass Band, played in pit orchestras for youth theatre companies, and accompanied a variety music festivals, as well as the Royal Over-seas League Music Competition (London) and the Keldwyth Young Musicians Award (Cumbria).

As a composer, David has always shown a natural flair for writing music, and after scoring for shows and performing his own work throughout his sixth form years, he successfully earned a place at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama (2009) studying contemporary music composition. In the last few years, David has had works performed and commissioned by the Lunar Sax Quartet, the BBC string quartet, members of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestra of Welsh National Opera, Eminence Brass Quartet (Philip Cobb, Richard Marshall, Owen Farr and David Childs) and Rosie Biss (Principal Cello, WNO). In 2010, the Erato Piano Trio selected David’s trio Twisted Reverie to premiere at the National Museum, Cardiff, and more recently, A Welsh Blessing for brass quintet won the Philip Jones Award for Brass Ensemble.

David currently resides as composer-in-residence to the Sinfonia Newydd Ensemble and Perfect Fifth Brass Quintet (Cardiff) and is music director of the All That Malarkey cabaret group.
